In Nibutani, Hokkaido, Nibutani Works was founded in 2022 to keep Ainu craft in active use rather than preserve it at a distance. Led by Kayano Kimihiro, grandson of the first Ainu member of the National Diet, the studio produces wood-carved objects and everyday goods rooted in the living traditions of the Nibutani community, made to be used rather than observed.
