Kakuri Japanese Aogami Blue Paper Steel #2 Hand Plane Red Oak Body 42mm

Sale price$76.00

Kakuri has produced Japanese woodworking tools in Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture since 1946, a region that has served as Japan's metalworking center since the Edo period. This 42mm hand plane is built for chamfering and surface finishing work, with a blade construction that places Aogami Blue Paper Steel No. 2 at the cutting edge, forge-welded to a softer iron backing. Aogami No. 2 is a high-carbon steel alloyed with chromium and tungsten, valued among Japanese blacksmiths for the sharpness it achieves and the edge it holds through sustained use. The laminate construction keeps the blade accessible on a whetstone despite the hardness of the cutting layer. The body is Japanese red oak, oil-finished to resist warping from moisture and humidity, the grain and texture distinct from the white oak used in standard Kakuri plane bodies. Made in Japan.
