Bizen Ware Urushi-kake Dimple Tumbler

Sale price$79.00

A line of urushi lacquer traces the rim of this tumbler and sharpens the whole form. Below it, Echizen clay keeps its natural character, grey brown and quietly grained, with amber glaze gathering in broken islands across the wall and a single soft dimple pressing in from the side. Hikari Kiln points to the smooth feel the lacquer gives the lip, a pleasure that only urushi offers. The wide mouth takes ice easily, suited to shochu and just as well to iced coffee. The clay is rich in iron, the same earth that has defined Echizen ware for some 850 years and placed it among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Its maker, Mitsuo Kasatsuji, is honored as a Contemporary Master Craftsman. Each handmade cup is presented in its own box.

A handleless ceramic tumbler featuring a dark brown ribbed upper section and a heavily textured, speckled ochre glaze on the lower half, set against a white background.

Hikari Kiln

Brand History

Hikari Kiln stands in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, in the heart of Echizen ware country, where potters have worked for 850 years. The vessels presented here are the work of Mitsuo Kasatsuji, born in 1947 in what was once the village of Miyazaki. Kasatsuji walks two paths at once: the artist who creates for Nitten, Japan’s foremost art exhibition, and the craftsman who makes vessels for daily use. His artistry has earned him a place as Nitten judge on four occasions, recognition as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, and, in 2018, a national decoration for devotion to his craft. His guiding words are simple: honor tradition, and make vessels for modern life. In every piece, the depth of Echizen clay meets the ease of the everyday table, so that the heights of fine art and the comfort of daily use are never separate things. Hikari Kiln continues to look ahead, exploring new forms of Echizen ware and craft that gently reach beyond tradition.
