Bizen Ware Mokubai Large Tumbler

Sale price$79.00

This handmade Japanese tumbler, a shochu cup in Echizen ware, keeps its wood ash glaze to the lower wall, where amber flecks gather and thicken like sparks settling after a fire. Burned wood becomes glass in the kiln, and here it settles as colour. Above, the clay is left bare, a deep grey brown, matte and softly grained, its fine throwing rings catching the light. The rim flares outward with a slight, living irregularity. The clay is rich in iron, the same earth that has anchored Japanese pottery in Echizen for some 850 years, among the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. A generous opening takes ice with ease, for shochu, whiskey or iced coffee. Shaped on the wheel, each one reads slightly differently from the next. Each cup is presented in its own box.

A handleless brown ceramic tumbler featuring a heavily textured, speckled ochre glaze on the lower half, set against a white background.

Hikari Kiln

Brand History

Hikari Kiln stands in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, in the heart of Echizen ware country, where potters have worked for 850 years. The vessels presented here are the work of Mitsuo Kasatsuji, born in 1947 in what was once the village of Miyazaki. Kasatsuji walks two paths at once: the artist who creates for Nitten, Japan’s foremost art exhibition, and the craftsman who makes vessels for daily use. His artistry has earned him a place as Nitten judge on four occasions, recognition as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, and, in 2018, a national decoration for devotion to his craft. His guiding words are simple: honor tradition, and make vessels for modern life. In every piece, the depth of Echizen clay meets the ease of the everyday table, so that the heights of fine art and the comfort of daily use are never separate things. Hikari Kiln continues to look ahead, exploring new forms of Echizen ware and craft that gently reach beyond tradition.
